Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor’s Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) has appealed to new political parties against using the party’s name and color.

MTD made the appeal in a tweet Wednesday, after Speaker Mohamed Nasheed named the new political party he is working on forming ‘The Democrats’ and asked Elections Commission (EC) to approve sky blue as the party’s color.

MTD said the party’s leader Adeeb had written and selected the party’s name, ideology and colors while incarcerated in a solitary cell at Dhoonidhoo Custodial.

“Since he fully believes in the centrist and democratic political ideologies, he picked the third-way and Democrats name,” said MTD. “He chose sky blue because, for three years, it was the only thing he could see from his cell that was hopeful.”

MTD said that while they are pleased to see names and colors of other new political parties are inspired by theirs, they want parties to come up with their own names and colors.

“However, while establishing new political parties, we politely ask others to come up with their own distinctive names and colors,” said the party.
