Elections Commission (EC) has said that they are now looking into Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) declaration that the current government came into power after a coup d'état and their decision to change the government through a revolution.
In an interview to Sun Online, the president of the EC Fuad Thaufeeq said that an unofficial commission meeting was held last Tuesday following the submission of the case by a private citizen relating to a declaration by the MDP to bring down the government through a revolution. He said that the Commission’s legal team is now investigating the case.
“We are currently working on matters such as collecting statements from MDP. The work is being carried by our legal section,” said Fuad.
He said that the commission will decide whether such a revolution declared by the MDP can be carried out in accordance with the country’s constitution, and that local law firms will be consulted during the investigation.
The case was submitted to the EC by an individual, Ibrahim Manik, of H. Finifenmaage Aage. His case stated that the declaration by the MDP national council to bring down the government through a revolution is a matter that must be investigated.
