173 accidents within first 15 days of Ramadan

Maldives Police Services revealed that the authority received reports of 173 accidents that occurred during the first half of Ramadan.

While details of crimes reported during Ramadan was shared with Sun, it includes statics of the crimes as well. 

As per the details shared, the highest number of accidents took place in the Male’ area. That is 151 accidents. 

The second highest number of accidents occurred in Addu City, which is nine.

Accidents reported in other areas:

  • Hdh Atoll: 3
  • Ha Atoll, Gdh Atoll and Fuvahmulah City: 2 in each atoll 
  • Raa Atoll, Baa Atoll, Adh Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll, Laamu Atoll, Ga Atoll: 1 in each atoll 

The number of road accidents generally increase during Ramadan, and Police regularly caution on being careful during the period. Hence, Police engage more officers in traffic control and keeping the roads safe. 

Looking at some other crimes reported the second highest number of reports were made on drug related incidents. This was a total of 153 cases, from which 66 were in Male’ area.

In addition to this, there were four reported cases of eating/ smoking in public areas during Ramadan. Moreover, there was 45 reports of threatening, two sexual harassment cases and three sexual abuse cases.
