Housing Development Corporation (HDC), on Friday, confirmed that they had dismissed one of their staff for taking company money for personal use.

HDC released a statement regarding social media posts in circulation claiming theft from a company’s safe in which they emphasized no such incident had occurred.

However, the corporation noted having taken note of one of its employees taking rent money paid by a lessee for personal use without reconciliation.

HDC said that the employee admitted to taking the money once the case came to light and was therewith dismissed from the post.

As per the corporation – the case came to light through the internal control processes established which directed a problem within reconciliation of receivables.

They also stressed that there would be no chance of stealing from a safe of the company due to the comprehensive internal control and internal audit processes established.

On Wednesday, HDC revealed the suspension of a staff who had taken a bribe of over MVR 1 million during a sale of a land plot from Thilafushi.

An official from the corporation, noting the case had been submitted to Maldives Police Service, said that they began their own probe as soon as the case came to light.

Sun has learned that the transaction took place in this year’s January but had come to light just two weeks ago. Reliable sources inform that the accused staff had previously been reprimanded in a similar case.
