Dr. Ashraf: Fostering love for Dhivehi language requires teaching patriotism

Fostering the love for Dhivehi language among Maldivian children requires revising education policies to teach patriotism in the Dhivehi language, states Dr. Ashraf Abdul Raheem, the president of Dhivehi Bahuge Academy.

Speaking at the National Poet’s Day function on Friday, Ashraf acknowledged the hard work of Dhivehi language teachers, and that they shared a common concern over lack of love for the Dhivehi language among students.

“We must consider why that is. As long as the Maldivian environment, Maldivian culture, Maldivian craftsmanship, and Maldivian literature isn’t taught in Dhivehi language in the education system, this is like pouring water into a bottomless pail. I therefore believe a decision must be made regarding this within the education system,” he said.

Ashraf said the work of the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy is a national service, and that greater attention must be paid to the academy’s work.

“I therefore do not understand why this work falls under the ‘C’ category. This work must be promoted nationally through the media,” he said.

Ashraf said the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy continues to face numerous challenges in informing the public of functions and information related to Dhivehi language.

Friday’s function was attended by Heritage Minister Yumna Maumoon, senior officials from Education Ministry, and leading litterateurs, and saw the presentation of awards to the winners of three competitions held last year; the 37th National Essay Writing Competition, the 34th National Short Story Writing Competition, and the 25th National Poetry Writing Competition.
