Maldives publishes book documenting 50 years of tourism

Tourism Ministry has published an e-book titled ‘The Golden 50 Years of Maldives’ Tourism’, documenting the development of the sector since tourism was introduced to the island nation in 1972.

The book was unveiled on Thursday by Maizaan Umar Manik, who was involved in the development of resorts and liveaboards in the early years Maldives tourism.

The book documents the launch of tourism in Maldives, the industry pioneers, the development of the tourism industry, the role of the government, and the role of tourism in the Maldivian economy.

The book also documents the transformation of the transport sector, mega projects linked with tourism, and the role of the future generations in maintaining the tourism sector.

The book includes a special message from Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, and several former ministers.

2022, the golden year of Maldives tourism, has proved a successful year, with the island destination crowned the World Travel Awards (WTA) World’s Leading Destination for the third consecutive year.

The destination has already surpassed the 1.6 million tourist arrivals it set the target for this year, which is just short of the record 1.7 million tourist arrivals it saw in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
