PSM’s Musthafa elected the new president of MMC

Public Service Media’s (PSM) Technical Operations Manager Ahmed Musthafa was elected as the new president of Maldives Media Council (MMC) on Thursday.

Election of MMC members for the upcoming term was held on Saturday. In the first meeting of the council held after the newly elected members took on Thursday – a president and a vice president of MMC for the next two years were decided.

PSM’s Musthafa and Aafathis Online’s Ali Nishan contested for the presidency. Musthafa was elected for the post with nine votes. Nishan scored six votes.

This marks the first time a representative from PSM has been elected for MMC’s presidency. Musthafa is an individual who plays an integral role in training people for the media sector, and assumes a senior role in the newsroom of state media. He has worked in the media sector for 28 years. Musthafa also lectures in different courses conducted for journalists at Maldives Media Institute.

Three individuals contested for the vice presidency. Vaguthu Online’s Hussain Shareef was elected for the post with seven votes. One Online’s Mohamed Simaau who contested alongside him received two votes while Ameen Mohamed, an independent candidate, received six votes.

MMC is composed of 15 members; eight representatives from medias and seven general members. However, only six representatives from medias were elected during this voting as the tenure of members elected in mid-last term have not yet expired.
