Dr. Asim elected Vice President of UNHRC from Asia-Pacific

Dr. Asim Ahmed has been elected as the Vice President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) from the Asia-Pacific group.

Asim is among the four vice presidents elected for a one-year term, beginning next year. The other three vice presidents are; Maira Mariela Macdonal Alvarez of Bolivia, Muhammadou M.O. Kah of the Gambia and Marc Bichler of Luxembourg.

Meanwhile, Václav Bálek from Czech Republic was elected to serve as the president.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid congratulated Asim on his election via a tweet. In his tweet, Minister Shahid described Asim’s election as a result of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s strong foreign policy.

He also expressed confidence that Asim will make the country proud.

Asim currently serves as the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva.

Asim, who has years of experience in foreign service, also served as Ambassador-at-Large at Maldivian Foreign Ministry.
