Tree Top Hospital performs complex surgery to repair knee dislocation

Tree Top Hospital has successfully performed a complex surgery to repair knee dislocation.

The surgery on three ligaments of the knee via arthroscopy was performed on a 31-year-old female patient who sustained her injuries from a motorcycle accident which resulted in her whole knee being dislocated, and all of the ligaments of her knee joint being torn.

According to Tree Top Hospital, the surgery is possibly the first case where all ligament reconstruction and Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) reconstruction have been done in Maldives.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Hussain Faisal, Consultant Orthopedic, and Dr. Kanniraj Marimuthu, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon from Tree Top Hospital’s Orthopedics Department. They were joined by Dr. Ahmad Mansour, Consultant Anesthesiologist and Dr. Lenka Cervenova, Consultant Anesthesiologist, and a skilled team of nurses.

Reflecting on her experience, the patient said the injury she sustained in the motorcycle accident had changed her life.

“This injury has changed my life, and Dr. Faisal and Dr. Kanniraj have both been committed to ensure my mental and physical well-being throughout the entire process. I also would like to share my gratitude to all the nurses, business office staff at Tree Top Hospital for being so attentive and accommodating to me,” she said.

Knee dislocation is a rare limb-threatening injury with multiple ligament injuries and multi-directional instability. A dislocated knee occurs when the round-shaped bone covering the knee (patella) moves or slides out of place.

The patient had all her ligaments reconstructed, with ligaments taken from both of her legs to reconstruct the damaged ones - all in one sitting.

Dr. Faisal said that ligament reconstruction of the knee joint is a challenging and meticulous work.

“Her surgery went smoothly and there were no complications,” he said.

Dr. Faisal thanked the patient for trusting Tree Top Hospital and undergoing the treatment with them.

“She will be requiring well-monitored rehabilitation after the initial recovery. We wish her a speedy recovery,” he said.
