Maldives-Korea Festival celebrates 55 years diplomatic relations

Maldives-Korea Festival opens on November 30, 2022.

The Maldives-Korea Festival kicked-off Wednesday, in celebration of the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and South Korea.

The festival was opened by Maldivian Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof, and was attended by South Korean Ambassador Jeong Woonjin, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, and officials from Foreign Ministry and foreign diplomats.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mahloof said the festival provides a golden opportunity for the Maldivian people to experience Korean culture, and strengthen the friendship between the two countries.

“I note will pleasure the increase in relations between the two countries the last 50 years. We don’t just recognize Korea as the world’s 11th largest economy, but as a prime example of promoting democracy and culture, and for K-pop, BTS, and some good TV serials,” he said.

Mahloof said the relations between Maldives and Korea was based on mutual respect.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nasheed said Korea could help Maldives improve its entertainment industry.

“Ambassador, I am sad to note that this is the only cinema in Maldives to screen movies. We need places like this. Korea is a country that shows exemplary hospitality. I have personally experienced this during two visits to Korea,” he said.

The Maldives-Korea Festival is co-organized by the Foreign Ministry and the Korean Embassy. It is being held from November 30-December 1 at the Schwack Cinema in Hulhumale’.

The events during the festival include taekwondo demonstrations and movie screenings.
