Leader of opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former President Abdulla Yameen, on Thursday, pledged to develop a tertiary hospital in N. Manadhoo if he wins the presidential election next year.

In his ongoing tour of Noonu Atoll, Yameen visited Manadhoo on Thursday. Speaking at an event held on the island – Yameen said that he does not believe a tertiary hospital needs to be developed in any other region before Manadhoo.

“If a tertiary hospital or a hospital on the same par as ones in Male’ region is developed at Noonu Atoll, it should be in Manadhoo. I do not believe a tertiary hospital needs to be developed in any other region before Manadhoo. If I am elected, such a standard of hospital will be developed in Manadhoo,” he had said.

Apart from this, Yameen also pledged to develop the roads in Manadhoo up to quality standards should he be elected.

Whilst Yameen has made the pledge – Health Minister Ahmed Naseem, in June, stated that the government was seeking a contractor to build an extension wing of Manadhoo Hospital.

Back then, Minister Naseem said that Health Ministry will request Finance Ministry to start the bidding process before the end of June, in order to find a contractor.

He also noted that when the project was tendered in 2020, the proposals received has been pricy, as a result of which the project was halted.

Minister Naseem also said that funding for the project had been arranged through financing from Bank of Maldives (BML).

Recently, six new OPD rooms and a laboratory were established at Manadhoo Hospital to combat space constraints faced.
