President decides to seek parliamentary advice on joining IALA

Upon the advice of his cabinet – President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Tuesday, has decided to seek advice from the parliament on whether Maldives should join the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA).

President Solih made the decision following extensive discussion at today’s cabinet meeting on the paper submitted by Transport Ministry.

The President’s Office states that IALA encourages its members to work together to develop marine aids to navigation worldwide – to ensure movements of vessels are safe while protecting the marine environment.

They detailed some of the advantages of joining IALA to include strengthening maritime cooperation with IALA member countries and ensuring the reliability of the maritime safety system.

Apart from this, the President’s Office said that IALA membership would help strengthening maritime cooperation with IALA member countries, ensuring the reliability of the maritime safety system and contribute to the protection of the marine environment.
