Emergency and Trauma Unit established at Dharavandhoo Health Centre

An Emergency and Trauma Unit was inaugurated at B. Dharavandhoo Health Centre on Wednesday.

Developed with grant assistance from the Government of India, the Emergency and Trauma Unit was inaugurated by Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi during a special ceremony. The ceremony also saw the attendance of Health Minister Ahmed Naseem, High Commissioner of India to the Maldives Munu Mahawar.

Speaking during the ceremony, Health Minister Naseem underscored the efforts initiated by the current administration to decrease the differences in the standard of services available in Male’ City and atolls by establishing basic services required by the people at an island-level was something imminently needed by the people.

Therewith, he said this administration’s vision in the provision of healthcare is to establish respective services in different areas in the country, for close proximity access.

Commenting on the inauguration of the Emergency and Trauma Unit at Dharavandhoo Health Centre – Dharavandhoo Council President Ali Sameer said that emergency healthcare services will be provided to patients with life-threatening conditions at the Unit.

“Because there is an airport on this island, we must be ready for any dangerous situations that may occur. The Unit will provide services under such circumstances,” he had said.

Sameer detailed that services will officially commence at the Unit after all equipment and human resources required for its operations are complete.

“The service will be available now too, but officially, the service will commence once employees have been recruited,” he had said.

Sameer said that additional equipment will be acquired for the Unit in the future, to further expand its services.

The Indian Government spent MVR 7.5 million as grant assistance on the development of the Emergency and Trauma Unit at Dharavandhoo Health Centre. The remaining MVR 900,000 was covered by the Maldivan government from the state budget.

Construction of the Unit was awarded to LF Constructions.
