Maldives police have denied media reports authorities found explosives in the luggage of two foreigners detained from the Velana International Airport earlier this week.

The two foreigners were detained from the airport on Sunday night.

The police declined to disclose their nationality, identifying them only as foreigners; one a 26-year-old and the other a 41-year-old.

They were detained from the airport and taken to police headquarters for questioning in connection to an ongoing investigation, said a police spokesperson.

They were formally arrested from the police headquarters.

The police issued a press statement on Tuesday denying reports authorities found explosives inside their luggage.

The Criminal Court issued an order on Monday to have both men remanded in custody of police for 10 days.

The two are reportedly Indian nationals suspected of espionage. They had reportedly been at the airport with spy cams.

However, police have disclosed little detail regarding the case.
