HRCM calls to end to discrimination against foreign nationals

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has called to end discrimination against foreign workers in the Maldives.

HRCM said this in a statement released in relation to the murder of Bangladeshi worker Muneerul Islam, 25, who was found stabbed to death last Monday.

HRCM strongly condemned this crime against humanity.

HRCM expressed sadness over the fact that Maldivians fail to recognize that foreign workers contribute significantly to the economic development of the country.

Noting that Maldives is a hundred percent Muslim country, HRCM said that such remorseless acts against other human beings are against the principles of Islam.

HRCM said that all humans have the right to equal rights regardless of country or race, and called on the relevant authorities to bring those responsible for this murder to justice.

Muneerul Islam was found murdered in his apartment located on the sixth floor of Chaandhanee Magu 24. His body has now been moved to the mortuary.

Police said that the case is under investigation as a ‘serious case’. No one has yet been arrested.
