Application as enumerators for Census extended

The Maldives Bureau of Statistics has extended the deadline to send in applications to work as enumerators in Census 2022.

The deadline for application has now been extended until June 12.

The bureau has previously announced seeking a total of 4,400 people – of which 2,409 to work in the greater Male’ region, and the remaining 1,991 to work in the atolls.

This is including 100 people as trainers.

Those selected for the work will be compensated with daily allowances as below:

·              MVR 500 per day for census fieldwork

·                 MVR 10 per day as phone allowance

·                 MVR 500 for each training day attended

·                 MVR 500 for every training session conducted (for trainers only)

All the allowances will be provided after all works related to the census have concluded.

Application to register as an enumerator or a trainer can be filled out on the website of Maldives Bureau of Statistics. 

Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam announced that Maldives will hold a population consensus this September – in last year’s September.

The slogan for Census 2022 is ‘Count Me In’.

Census 2022 will include a census of persons working in the economic sector – contrary to the censuses taken prior.

Timeline of Census 2022:

  •   September 16, 2021: Census 2022 date launching event
  •   October 2021: Public opinion sought regarding information collected in the census
  •   November 2021 – January 2022: Pretest
  •   March 2022: The pilot census
  •   June 2022 – July 2022: Pre-listing
  •   July 2022 – September 2022: Census of persons working in the economic sector
  •   July 2022: Enumerator training in atolls
  •   August 2022 – September 2022: Enumerator training in Male’ region
  •   17-30 September: Taking the census
  •   October 6: Announcement of preliminary results
  •   October 20: Announcement of permanent results

The first time a population census was taken in the Maldives was in 1911. Following this consensus was taken every 10 years – up until it came to halt in 1931.

The last time a nationwide population census was taken in the Maldives was in 2014 – which showed that country had a total population of 402, 071 people.
