Former Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) has revealed that Sifainge Co-operative (SIFCO) has stated they do not have the authorization to hold fireworks at political events.

Nasheed told Sun that when a request was put in to hold fireworks at an event to celebrate the Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) success in the by-election of Lh. Kurendhoo Council’s president – SIFCO had responded they do not have the authorization to hold fireworks at political events.

He detailed that the response to the email requesting to hold fireworks at the event stated that SIFCO would be unable to comply with the request as the company does not have the authorization to hold fireworks at political events.

Critiquing that response – Nasheed underscored that only Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) provides the service.  Thus, he said that refusal to provide the service subsequent to the nature of the event being political was concerning.

He also pointed out that SIFCO has previously held fireworks at multiple political events of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

He stressed that holding fireworks is a pledge he had made to Kurendhoo residents.

“I promised fireworks for Kurendhoo residents if we win the by-election,” he had said.

Therefore, he said that he would still work on fulfilling that pledge.

“I have called Minister Mariya, messaged her. No response yet,” he added.
