President Solih: Government aims to make Olhuvelifushi fully solar powered

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the government aims to make Lh. Olhuvelifushi a fully solar-powered island.

In his three-day tour of Lhaviyani Atoll, President Solih made a stop at Olhuvelifushi during which he met with the residents of the islands in an event titled ‘Jazeera Holhuashi’. Speaking at the meeting, he noted that 70 percent of Olhuvelifushi was solar-powered under the renewable energy project initiated at the island. He stressed that by the time the project reaches full completion, the island would be fully solar-powered.

“A significant portion of the renewable energy project at Olhuvelifushi has been completed, whereas 70 percent of the electricity used in the island at present of solar-generated. The government’s aim is to fully solar power the island,” he had said.

Speaking at the ‘Jazeera Holhuashi’ event, President Solih also shared with the residents, the latest updates on the developmental projects initiated at the island.

In this regard, he highlighted that upgrading the powerhouse on the island was moving forward at a fast pace. Noting that installation of turf at the football stadium is complete – he assured that the government will carry out the additional works necessary to complete the stadium.

President Solih also noted that the Council had requested to expand the harbor during their meeting. He added that the technical surveys necessary for the expansion will be conducted, after the changes that will be brought to harbor and how to proceed with the expansion will be discussed with the Council.

He also revealed that 10 classrooms would be built at the school currently in development at Olhuvelifushi, instead of the eight planned earlier to accommodate single-session schooling.

Also discussed were the plans to extend the island’s health centre and introduce additional health services for the people.

He also announced that he would facilitate the development of a gym at the island at the request of the Council and WDC.

President Solih concluded his three-day tour of Lhaviyani Atoll today. In this tour, he visited Madivaru, his birth island Hinnavaru, Felivaru, Naifaru, Olhuvelifushi and Kurendhoo. He was accompanied by ministers and governmental officials on the trip.
