President Solih meets UN’s State Minister for South, Central Asia

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday met with Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, the Minister of State for South and Central Asia, the United Nations (UN), the Commonwealth and the Prime Minister's Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict of the United Kingdom (UK).

In the meeting held on Felivaru Island in the Lhaviyani Atoll, President Solih spoke of the services provided by the resident mission of UK in Maldives over the years.

He addressed the issues pertaining to women and children’s rights in Maldives, and noted the achievements of the administration in the area.

Additionally, he stressed the administration’s commitment to continue empowering women and children in the future.

President Solih also addressed some of the other rising concerns in Maldives, such as religious extremism.

Recalling the assassination attempt on former President Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, 2021, he described it as a "wake up call" for the Maldives to the growing threats of terrorism and extremism.

Moreover, he expressed keenness on expanding economic horizons and spoke about easing tariffs on Maldives’ fish exports.

The President and Lord Ahmad also spoke on a variety of other subjects, including challenges caused by climate change facing small island developing states such as Maldives.

In the meeting, President Solih extended his support towards the UK's commitment to reforming the Commonwealth and making the organisation work for everyone.

Both diplomats reaffirmed a shared commitment continue working together for the common welfare of the citizens of both countries before concluding the meeting.
