Habib Bank to close 21 dormant accounts

Habib Bank, Male' Branch.

Habib Bank has publicized the details of 21 dormant accounts registered to its Male’ Branch which they have decided to close.

As per an announcement by the Bank, no transactions have taken place in these 21 accounts for a period of five years, as at the end of last December.

Noting that no documents have been sent to the owners of the accounts by the Bank – Habib Bank said that account statements were regularly sent to the last known address of the owner.

In addition to this, the Bank noted that in accordance with the Maldivian Banking Act, they had forwarded separate notices through registered post on January 2, to the owners – requesting their presence at the Bank within 45 days from the date of the letter, with an unexpired identity card or passport.

Despite this, Habib Bank said that the owners had not presented themselves to the Bank, nor had informed them of any extenuating circumstances.

Therefore, the Bank said that they are requesting the presence of the owners at the Bank with 60 days from today, with an unexpired identity card or passport, in order to complete the formalities required to reactivate the account.

They further detailed that if no instructions are received from the account owner within this period – their account will be closed, whereas chequebooks and other instructions given to the Bank would be nullified. Furthermore, the Bank stressed that the monies deposited in the account at the time of closing would be handed over to Maldives Monetary Authority.
