Maldives’ COVID-19 death toll rises to 276

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Monday that a COVID-19 patient taken to Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.      

HPA identified the deceased as a 95-year-old Maldivian male.      

He passed away at 06:17 pm on Monday.  

“This is the 276th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet.     

It marks the 11th COVID-19 death in Maldives in January.      

Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant. Health experts expect the cases to peak by the end of January or beginning of February.   

Maldives has 136,126 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 2,838 new cases recorded on Sunday. 118,249 patients have since recovered.          

The country currently has 17,589 active cases. 53 of the patients are hospitalized.
