President Solih: Guesthouse tourism in the Maldives is an example to the world

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had stated that guesthouse tourism being carried out in the Maldives is an example to the rest of the world.

Speaking at the ceremony held to hand over the reclaimed land as Maafushi Picnic Island to K. Maafushi Council – President Solih said that local tourism was first introduced in the Maldives during MDP’s first administration. Therefore, he thanked former President Mohamed Nasheed for this.

Noting that tourism in the Maldives began under the concept ‘One Island, One Resort’ – President Solih said that Maldives is currently a prime example in tourism for the rest of the world.

“It is a tourism accepted as an example by the world. After that, then came local tourism. Guesthouse tourism,” he had said.

Stressing that the Maldivian guesthouse tourism is now also widely accepted around the – President Solih said that Maafushi residents are owed the most gratitude for this.

“Today, Maldivian guesthouse tourism has become an example in world tourism. The guesthouses in Maldives are not like the ones you see in other countries. Way complete. Way better. Guesthouses which has all services available,” he had said.

President Solih said that such a modern guesthouse tourism first bean at Maafushi. He added that this has significantly changed the economy for the better, also straightening it.

At today’s ceremony, he also urged that Maafushi Picnic Island be used in a manner that financially and otherwise benefits the people.

He also noted that expansion of Maafushi harbor is included in next year’s state budget.

Reclamation of Maafushi Picnic Island under Maafushi Picnic Island land reclamation and coastal protection project was completed on December 19.

The project was contracted by the Planning Ministry to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The project being carried out with the reclamation of two hectares of land is under the government’s aim to provide a picnic destination for the people during the holidays.
