No dishonest deals were made with GMR: Maumoon

The family of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said today that no member of the family was ever involved in bribery or dishonest dealings with GMR.

In a press release signed by Farish Maumoon, the former President’s eldest son, the family said that the reason for this press release is to inform Maldivians of the truth, after certain confusing statements were made with regard to the former President’s family, by Deputy Leader of DRP Mr Ibrahim Shareef and Deputy Leader of Qaumee Party Mr Imad Solih.

The Press Release states that the former president was never in favor of allowing the country’s wealth being managed by foreigners, and would never allow such a proceeding. He has spoken publicly on this issue on several occasions.

“…The former president was one of the first to raise his voice against the sale of Male’ International Airport by the government of Mohamed Nasheed. This is in line with President Maumoon’s policies,” reads the Press Release.

It also says that the former president criticizing GMR’s actions does not lead to the respect accorded to him by the Indian Government being compromised.

The Press Release also calls for Maldivians to participate in the protest planned for 23 December, organized by some opposition parties and religious organizations.

DRP and Qaumee Party have accused dishonest relations between GMR and the family of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. They have also pointed out that since the foundation of PPM, nothing has been done against GMR’s proceedings.
