More aid sent to Hoarafushi

More material aid has been dispatched to Ha. Hoarafushi, the island that suffered the most damage in the recent heavy rains experienced in the Maldives.

Minister of State for Defence, and Chief Coordinator of Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Mohamed Ahmed said in a press conference today, that 90 bag of rice, sugar and flour, and 245 cases of water had been sent to Hoarafushi earlier.

“In addition, we have sent 20 cases of biscuits, five cases cooking oil and five barrels chlorine,” he said.

Mohamed Ahmed said that medicine for emergency purposes, 20 mattresses and 40 pillows were dispatched today, and efforts are underway to also sent 80 mattresses, 160 pillows and 200 blankets.

“People were moved to other locations except for 15 households in the island. One of those households were moved to the temporary shelter. This is 74 people out of the entire population. Everyone was moved back to their homes yesterday,” he said.

He informed that rice, sugar and floor were sent to Ha. Ihavandhoo, Ha. Kelaa and Hdh. Nolhivaranfaru through the STO Regional Centre in Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi.

Rice, sugar and flour were also sent to L. Isdhoo, Maavah and Maabaidhoo from L. Fonadhoo STO Regional Centre.

Mohamed Ahmed said that water and sewerage systems of 11 islands have been damaged. Repair is underway by Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) for two sewerage pumps brought to Male’ from Thun’di, L. Gan.

The Department of Meteorology has said that isolated showers will be experienced over the country or the next 24 hours, and that few thunderstorms expected in some regions. Winds are expected south-west/ westerly at 5 to 13 Knots, and at 27 Knots during showers.
