The national meteorological service, MET Office has said that fairly widespread rain will be experienced all over the country, and heavy rain and squally showers are expected over central and northern atolls for the next 48 hours.
An official of MET Office said that the bad weather is caused by a low pressure trough passing over the Maldives.
“The storm formed about 350km northeast of Sri Lanka is gaining strength and moving towards the coast of Tamil Nadu,” he said.
He said that strongest winds for the past 24 hours were observed yesterday afternoon, at 48 miles per hour. Over the next 48 hours, winds may gust at 45 to 55 miles per hour during showers.
As seas are expected to be rough throughout the country, travellers are advised to take necessary precautions.
Bad weather has been experienced all over the country for the past few days. Travel has nonetheless increased due to Eid holidays.
