IPU delegation to investigate alleged police brutality against MPs

A delegation from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is set to visit the Maldives to investigate cases of alleged police brutality against a number of Members of Parliament from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Ibrahim “Iboo” Mohamed Salih told today that the decision on the visit of IPU delegation to the Maldives was made during the 127th General Assembly of the organization from the 21st to 26th of this month in Canada.

Iboo said that the decision was made following a case filed to that effect by MDP. He also said a similar delegation would be sent to Turkey as well.

MDP’s complaint at the IPU Assembly was made in relation to the allegations that the police and defence forces “beat and illegally arrested and detained” MPs on the 7th and 8th of February this year.

Iboo said that they had no information about the composition of the delegation and the date for its arrival in the Maldives.

MDP has claimed that on the 7th and 8th of February and on several other occasions, the police had mistreated some 19 of its MPs. It is also reported that the IPU had previously submitted three confidential reports to the government and the People’s Majlis on the issues in question.
