Maldives Police Service has said that it collected more than MVR4 million over the past nine months as traffic fines.
Talking to media on reduction of crime in Male’, Head of Central Operation Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudi said that from January until the end of September 2012, MVR4.4 million had been collected as traffic fines.
Saudi said that the Police do not wish to collect these fines.
“This is money that can be saved if people abide by rules and regulations,” he said.
He said that crime level went down following the government’s decision to prohibit 24 hour operation of shops and cafes. He said that this decision had also reduced the number of people on the streets at night.
Saudi said that Police had questioned and maintains profiles of 2,930 people, which includes several people released from prison under the Second Chance program.
