Elections Commission (EC) has rejected Abdulla Kamaluddin’s application to form a new political party in the Maldives citing that he is still listed as a member of the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).

EC has also stated that they have nullified Kamaluddin’s application and that he does not fit the criteria of an applicant requesting to form a new political party.

Speaking to Sun regarding the rejection of his application by EC, Kamaluddin stressed that MRM’s failure to carry out their responsibilities should not keep him from his rights.

“If a phone call was made to MRM, then it could have been confirmed that I had left the party. There is nothing I can do if EC tweets without doing something as simple as that. What you see here is the result of a people’s institution failing to be of service to the people while carrying out their duties as they please,” he said.

Kamaluddin also added that he will re-submit his application “once MRC fulfills their responsibilities”.

Secretary-General of MRM Abdul Aleem has also confirmed to Sun that Kamaluddin has submitted a request to leave the party – however, they have not yet been to inform EC yet due to delays in carrying out the work of the party in the light of the ongoing pandemic. He also added that they would inform Kamaluddin’s departure from the party to the EC today.

Regarding his departure from MRM, Kamaluddin had stated to Sun that it was because he wished to change his perspective on politics in light of the status of politics in the Maldives.
