May 6 blast: Special envoy updates President on his inquiry

Abbas Faiz, the special envoy to the Government of Maldives to monitor the investigation, prosecution, and trial process of the terrorist attack against the Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed has updated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on the progress of his inquiry.

At a meeting held at the President’s Office this morning, Faiz briefed the President on the work carried out by him so far and also shared his plans for the future.

Speaking to Faiz at this meeting, the President requested Faiz to ensure due process is followed and to guarantee the investigation is being conducted in compliance with best practices at all stages.

Faiz was appointed as the Special Envoy on May 19. He arrived in the Maldives on June 2.

In this capacity, he is mandated to ensure that all stages of the investigation, prosecution, and trial of the alleged perpetrators, and any related and necessary inquiries related to the terrorist attack against the Speaker of the Parliament that took place on May 6 – is performed in accordance with international practices as well as national laws in order to ensure public confidence in the integrity of these processes.

Faiz’s oversight of the ongoing investigation will be conducted within the parameters set by the Prosecutor General.
