Vice President (VP) Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that the government is determined to achieve the millennium goals within the expected time frame.
The VP made this remark while speaking at the function held at United Nations (UN) building yesterday evening to mark its 67th anniversary.
“The government fully recognizes the increasing income disparities, youth unemployment, maternal mortality, malnutrition of children, gang violence and increasing drug addiction,” he said.
Waheed Deen said that the country’s achievements in relation to millennium goals have been with the support of the UN, and noted that the Maldives achieved five out of eight goals before the 2015 deadline.
He said that in order for Maldives to develop the required strategies and policies, it needs the participation of all stakeholders including independent bodies, institutions, NGOs, parliament members, political parties, civil society, general public and the government.
At the ceremony, awards were presented by the Vice President to students who won various competitions held on the occasion of UN Day.
