Eight sentenced to seven years in prison for causing damage to VTV

The Criminal Court has sentenced eight people to seven years in prison, after being convicted of throwing stones at the security officers at VTV Building during the protest held by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on 19 March.

The convicts are Ahmed Naeem of H. Ladhumaageaage; Ismail Hammad of Fehiali, R. Maduvvari; Hussain Shifau Jameel of M. Nooruzeyru; Azim Hassan of Aazaadhuge, Aa. Feridhoo; Ahmed Hameed of Hameedheemanzil, R. Alifushi; Hussain Hameed of Hameedheemanzil, R. Alifushi; Mohamed Hameed of Male’ Registry 7471; and Ahmed Muheen of G. Haalam.

The Criminal Court verdict details that the witnesses presented in Court by the State provided statements that they had witnessed the eight people throwing stones at VTV Building and the security officers at VTV Building, whereby the crime is proved against them.

The eight people were charged for attempting to cause damage to private property under the law on preventing intimidation and use of weapons and sharp objects.

Hussain Shifau Jameel of M. Nooruzeyru is also being accused by the State of stealing a motorcycle. This case has been sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
