Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed the death an additional COVID-19 patient admitted at Hulhumale’ Medical Facility, increasing fatalities on Saturday alone to three.

HPA identified the latest fatality as a 75-year-old Maldivian male.

He passed away at 08:49 pm on Saturday.

“This is the 206th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA.

It followed the death of a 55-year-old Indian male admitted at Hulhumale’ Medica Facility at 01:30 am, and the death of a 41-year-old Maldivian male admitted at Hulhumale’ Medical Facility at 05:19 am.

Maldives experienced an alarming surge in both infection rate and fatalities following the ease in restrictive measures in April. Infection rates have since begun dropping with the implementation of new restrictive measures in May, but fatalities continue to worrying.

Last May saw the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a single month, with 88 deaths. This June has seen 42 deaths.

Maldives has 71,709 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 211 new cases recorded on Saturday. 66,090 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 5,403 active cases. 46 of the patients are hospitalized.
