Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Friday that a COVID-19 patient admitted at Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.

HPA identified the latest fatality as a 68-year-old Maldivian female.

She passed away at 02:05 am on Friday.

“This is the 202nd COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA.

COVID-19 death toll in Maldives has now surpassed the death toll from the shigella outbreak back in 1982, when 197 people lost their lives.

Maldives experienced an alarming surge in both infection rate and fatalities following the ease in restrictive measures in April. Infection rates have since begun dropping with the implementation of new restrictive measures in May, but fatalities continue to worrying.

Last May saw the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a single month, with 88 deaths. This June has seen 38 deaths.

Maldives has 71,356 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 218 new cases recorded on Thursday. 64,214 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 6,390 active cases. 67 of the patients are hospitalized.
