Committee approves secret vote for no-confidence motions

Parliament’s General Committee has passed to amend the Parliament regulations to allow secret voting on no-confidence motions.

The amendment was proposed by Baarah MP, Mohamed Shifaz.

Considering the upcoming no-confidence motions against the President and Home Minister, the General Committee held its debate on this amendment today.

A Committee Member said that the amendment was voted in favour by four MDP members, following which the amendment has been sent to the Parliament for approval.

The amendment was earlier submitted and withdrawn from Parliament by Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir.

The no-confidence motion against the President will be passed if it is voted in favour by two-thirds of the Parliament, or 52 MPs.

Under existing regulations, voting on no-confidence motions are open, of which details are also published on the Parliament website.
