Male’ City Council has announced plans to obtain public opinion on imposing parking fees on vehicles in Male’, under the land transport vehicle parking regulation.
The regulation, published in January 2012, states that parking zones and fees should be decided by City Councils based on policies drawn up by the Councils.
Male’ City Council member Mohamed Abdul Kareem said that efforts are underway to establish policies on parking fees, and that fees will be imposed early next year.
“We haven’t decided on the fee rates yet, this decision will be made after discussion with members of the public,” he said.
He said that parking fees will first be imposed on vehicles used by businesses, and subsequently on all land transport vehicles.
The regulation stipulates that City Council can divide parking zones into areas where parking is free, and areas where fees are imposed at specified hours. Priority should be given to imposing parking fees on popular parking areas, and allowing free parking at less popular areas.
The maximum parking fees per hour that can be imposed on motorcycles is MVR2, vehicles that can carry up to 6 people is MVR5, 10 people is MVR15, 20 people is MVR25; and vehicles that can carry loads of up to 1 ton is MVR15.
