The times are hard, yet the government has the support of businessmen and the public, claims President Mohamed Nasheed. Speaking at a meeting held at Traders Hotel, Malé this evening by the American Embassy to mark the 235th Independence Day of United States of America, the President said that his economic policies had been accepted by the nation.
The President said that with the support of the public, businessmen and the political parties, economic reforms would begin bearing fruits before the end of the year. He described the government’s economic reform plan in terms of broadness, and claimed that the depth and content of the reform package to be almost equal in magnitude as the constitutional reforms which allowed multi-party democracy in the Maldives.
He said that the Maldives was going in the right direction and that he was certain that the solution for the present challenges would be achieved and the promises made to the public would eventually be fulfilled.
The President also spoke about the human trafficking issue over which American authorities had expressed concern. He said that steady measures had being initiated to find a solution for the matter. He also said that the issue of human trafficking was a big concern for the Maldives as well, and that the Maldives wanted to respect the human rights and to work with others with mutual understanding and respect.
