Former Vice President of the Maldives Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has alleged that the Prosecutor General’s Office is an institution to hide the crimes of the current administration.

Jameel tweeted last night after former Vilimale MP Ahmed Nihan’s passport was held by the authorities in relation to the MMPRC scandal.

Jameel also questioned what the government had done to recover the money lost in the scandal.

“The two that carried out the crimes through SOF are home, have they returned the money? How the charges are brought, makes it seem as if they are targeted to some. The PG seems to assist in hiding the faults of the government.” Said Jameel in a tweet.

Many ex-parliamentarians as well as some current ones are alleged to have received pay-offs from the scandal. They include MPs from both PPM and MDP.

Charges have so far been brought against former President Abdulla Yameen, former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, former Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath, and businessman Hamid Ismail.

Both Adeeb and Ziyath have entered into a plea deal with the prosecution. Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years but remains under house arrest due to his health while Ziyath was jailed for 11 years.
