Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has criticised several individuals surrounding President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, claiming that some are “incompetent” and that the current administration has formed the “most incapable cabinet” in the country’s history.

Speaking on SSTV’s Baaru Hathareh programme, Jameel said one of the reasons the ruling PNC performed poorly in the recent local council elections was the referendum on holding two national elections on the same day. He said another reason was the presence of “incompetent people” around the President.

Responding to Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau’s claim that the referendum results reflected public confidence in President Muizzu, Jameel said such statements were made by individuals close to the President.

“Perhaps it is such talk made by people around Muizzu, such as Baarah MP Shujau and Falaah,” he said.

“They are such an incapable, incompetent and far‑from‑political‑reality cabinet. No President of Maldives has ever formed such a cabinet.”

Jameel also criticised the scale of government spending during the council election campaign, saying administrations typically do not spend heavily on such elections. He claimed the government spent nearly MVR 1 billion and used “all the influence it could” during the campaign.

“All of that together, and the government got about 30 percent,” he said.

Jameel said the results show the government is “over”, adding that it has been unable to reduce spending or improve services. He claimed many Maldivians feel that government offices and ministries are not providing the services they should.

He further predicted that the next presidential election would be contested by former President Abdulla Yameen and a candidate from the opposition MDP.
