The council of Baarah has been fined for the illegal removal of trees on the island.
The Environmental Protection Agency fined the council with MVR 191,250 for the illegal removal of trees from the island’s beach and coastal areas.
Removal of trees are to be carried out under a special permit from the EPA. Two trees are to be planted for the removal of one according to the regulations for the practice.
The fine must be paid within a period of 30 days. The issue was first identified in October last year.
The council has not commented on the case so far.
