Hulhumale’ Court has ordered the Police to detain former President Mohamed Nasheed in order to produce him in Court for the trial on the illegal arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.

The trial has had to be cancelled twice due to Nasheed’s failure to appear in Court.

The Police said that the arrest warrant is to produce Nasheed in Court at 4:00pm on Tuesday.

A Police Media Official said that the Police are taking the necessary action to comply with this order.

The Hulhumale’ Court order follows article 17 (a) of the regulation on Court summons, which stipulates that if the Court regards ensuring the presence of a person at the court in relation to an ongoing trial by keeping him or her in detention to be the best choice in a particular circumstance, the Court can do so through the Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS), or the Maldives Police Services, or any other authority which has the legal power to detain persons, by issuing a Court Order to that effect.
