High Court rejects appealed Hulhumale

The High Court has rejected the case appealed by former President Mohamed Nasheed’s legal team, regarding the order by Hulhumale’ Court to the Police to produce Nasheed in Court today at 4:00pm for the trial on the illegal arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.

Member of Nasheed’s legal team Hisaan Hussain said that the decision to reject the appeal was made by the High Court Registrar.

“The High Court Registrar has decided that the High Court will not accept this case. We have therefore decided to take the matter to Supreme Court,” Hisaan said.

Police said yesterday that despite the order by Hulhumale’ Court, Nasheed can only be produced in Court with his consent.

Nasheed challenged the Court order and departed on a campaign trip last Monday.

Nasheed is charged under article 81 of the Penal Code, which states, “It shall be an offence for any public servant by reason of authority of office he is in to detain to arrest or detain in a manner contrary to Law innocent persons.

“Person guilty of this offence shall be subjected to exile or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 3 years or a fine not exceeding Mrf 2,000.00.”
