Four arrested in relation to Afrasheem

Four people have been arrested under suspicion of the murder of renowned scholar and Ungoofaaru MP, Dr Afrasheem Ali.

Speaking at a press conference held today at Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, Head of Specialist Crime, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hassan Habeeb said that three men and one woman have been taken into custody, and that great progress has been made in the investigation of Dr Afrasheem’s murder.

Habeeb said that no details of the arrested can be revealed at this stage, as it might obstruct the investigation.

Members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have said on social network websites that a leading female activist of the party was arrested last night while she was at Dolphin Cafe. They have called for her release.

Habeeb said that more information will be given as soon as the investigation is complete.

“We are not interested in any political party in this investigation. The investigation is being conducted in a professional manner, so we cannot provide any more information at this stage,” he said.

Police have appealed to the public for cooperation in this investigation, and particularly requested any person who saw Afrasheem’s car on the night of 1 October between 10:50pm and 1:00am in Male’, to come forward with the information.
