Police Commissioner to be questioned by 241 Committee on

The Committee on Security Services (241 Committee) has made the decision to summon Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz for questioning to understand the existing level of threat to a senior officials of government institutions, following the killing of Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali.

Members discussed how security is being provided by the Police to senior officials of government institutions, especially to Members of Parliament.

They also decided to check how security was provided to Afrasheem, who was killed on Monday night.

Members expressed concern and criticized the manner in which security is provided by the Police, and noted that Police lack efficiency in providing security in dangerous situations.

They discussed the dangers faced by personnel of that the judiciary and government institutions in everyday life.

Parliamentary Group Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdullah Yameen said that the Committee should find out the Police’s measure of the protection existing for MPs, and stressed that the threat to government institutions’ officials must be assessed.

He proposed to summon the Police to the Committee for questioning in this regard.

Medhu-henveiru MP Ali Azim said that hatred exists in society towards MPs, and blamed the media for contributing to this through spread of irresponsible information.

He proposed that the institution responsible for media regulation be summoned to the Committee for questioning, and the Committee passed to summon officials of Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) for questioning.

Seven members voted in support of summoning Police Commissioner and Head of MBC to the Committee tomorrow; while Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed abstained.
