Lawmaker calls for release of inmates for economic survival

MP for Kaashidhoo Abdulla Jabir has presented a motion to the Parliament to mandate the government to pardon and release inmates convicted of minor criminal offenses for the purpose of economic activities.

MP Jabir said that during the delicate economic situation of the country due to COVID-19, expatriate workers in the Maldives have to be repatriated in order to uphold the economy of the nation.

He noted that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in an address to the nation, called on Maldivians to familiarize themselves with the working environment.

MP Jabir said that convicts of minor criminal offenses are to be released with the exception of those convicted of child abuse, drug-related offenses, and murder as well as similar major offenses.
