Former Kaashidhoo MP and businessman Abdullah Jabir has signed up to the ruling PNC.

Before formally joining the party, Jabir had already taken part in the PNC’s campaign during the last local council elections, including door‑to‑door activities and rallies in Hulhumale' and Male'.

Speaking to Sun, Jabir said he joined the PNC after careful consideration. He said he believes President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is working responsibly and that the PNC is a party with a strong future.

“I believe that the PNC is doing things for the welfare of the people of Maldives, so I saw peace within the party and everyone working together as a team,” Jabir said.

He said he believes the President is working closely with the public and that the government is focused on improving the country’s situation.

Jabir said he will work to help the PNC win back the North Hithadhoo seat previously held by PNC MP Mohamed Sinan, and urged his supporters to join the party.

Jabir signed up to the PNC on Thursday and denied rumours that he had been granted any tax or fine waivers. “Nothing like that happened, it’s a lie, [there are] compensations that the court has to give me, I have nothing to give,” he said.

Jabir, who first entered Parliament in 2004, was among the leaders involved in forming the DRP, which later became the country’s second‑largest political party. He later rejoined the DRP and served as its leader.

He also served as Vice‑President of the JP and as an Advisor to the President during his time in the MDP.

Before joining the PNC, Jabir was last in the MDP. He won the party’s primary for the Kaashidhoo seat for the 20th Parliament, but after an ethics review, he was stripped of his ticket and expelled from the party.
