Hearing for Police Commissioner

Today’s hearing for the case filed by Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz against former President Mohamed Nasheed, accusing him of defamation, has been cancelled.

An official of Civil Court said that the hearing was cancelled following a request by Riyaz’s lawyer.

Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim has also sued former President Nasheed for defamation.

Lawyers representing Riyaz and Nazim have said that Nasheed is accused following comments passed by him in a speech at a rally at Usfasgandu on the day the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) released its report.

Nasheed said in his speech that Riyaz and Nazim are suspected of having conducted a coup, and that people should therefore continue to call them ‘traitors’.
