Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been summoned to Court in relation to a case filed by Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, who has sued Nasheed of defamation.
An official of Civil Court said that the case was filed by Nazim early last month, and that the first hearing will be held on 2 October.
He confirmed that Nasheed is being charged with defamation.
Sun Online understands that this is the second time a hearing pertaining to this case has been scheduled. It was earlier scheduled for 18 September, however, had to be cancelled due to Nasheed being out of the country.
Nazim, who is currently abroad, told Sun Online in an interview today that Nasheed is being sued for defamation following a speech he gave at a rally of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) at Usfasgandu, in which Nasheed had called him a ‘traitor’.
It has not yet been possible to contact MDP in relation to this matter.
However some senior officials of MDP have stated on social networks that Nasheed has been summoned to Court for calling the Defence Minister a traitor.
Meanwhile, Hulhumale’ Court has also banned Nasheed from travelling outside of Male’ due to the pending trial pertaining to the illegal arrest of the Chief Judge of Criminal Court.
