Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that it does not make sense for government coalition parties to protest against the current operator of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA), GMR.

Thasmeen said this in a special interview with Sun Online today.

“We are all part of the government. The government has to make a decision on the airport having been awarded to GMR. So why should we protest, involve the Police, and facilitate confrontation?”

Thasmeen referred to the participation by members of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s party in the protest, and said that there is no point in protesting, rather, the case will be closed once the President makes a decision.

He stressed that things would be much simpler if the President makes his decision, instead of involving Police and spending money on protests.

Thasmeen said that DRP will remain with the government regardless of the government’s decision on this issue.

“I’m being very clear about this, regardless of the government’s decision on this issue, DRP will not leave the government. The government will consider all aspects before making its decision. They can reclaim the airport if they want, or take the matter to Court. Or do whatever else they want. I don’t believe there is any reason for us to take to the streets to protest,” he said.

A seven-party coalition have announced that they will gather at artificial beach tomorrow night to protest for reclaiming the airport from GMR.
