Law Enforcement Institute Agreement of $18m signed

An agreement has been signed between Maldives and India, for the establishment of the Institute of Law Enforcement and Security (ILES) in Maldives.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at Bandos Island Resort today, by Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed on behalf of the Maldivian government and Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on behalf of the Indian government.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, Dr Jameel said that ILES will benefit law enforcement agencies and judicial sector of Maldives, through facilitation of trainings and research in these areas.

Dr Jameel thanked the Indian government for the establishment of this institution.

Shinde said in his speech at the ceremony that challenges faced by the Maldives’ security and law enforcement sectors were presented at today’ s meeting, and that the established of ILES would facilitate solutions to these problems.

He stressed that the bilateral relations between Maldives and India are strong, and assured that India will always assist Maldives.

Dr Jameel said that work at ILES will commence shortly, but did not mention an exact date.

Police have said that ILES, established at Lh. Dhiffushimaidhoo, will provide trainings and conduct research in the areas of law enforcement and security.

Discussions have been held between Maldives and India for some time, on the establishment of such an Institute in the Maldives.
