Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he does not believe that he can be prosecuted, as any criminal charges against him, any Member of Parliament of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), or any City Council Member would be considered as politically-motivated charges by the international community.
Nasheed made this statement while talking to reporters at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, upon arrival from his visit to the UK.
“I don’t believe that I, MPs, or City Councillors can be prosecuted. The international community will consider such charges as politically motivated. It would be difficult to see it any other way,” he said.
He said that he does not believe that the government has plans to charge him or any member of his party.
When asked by Sun Online whether his comments that Maldives might be attacked by al-Qaida might have a negative impact on the Maldivian economy, Nasheed said that this is the truth about Maldives and the only thing left to do is to work towards freeing our country from such threats.
“The government is fully aware of the situation. Maumoon was also aware of what was happening. The situation is very clear now. I believe that we must accept that this is a problem for us, and it is essential that we try to find solutions,” he said.
He also said that the government is not trying to reclaim the airport from GMR, and that the most beneficial policy for the Maldives would be to attract foreign investment.
Nasheed met UK Foreign Secretary William Hague as part of his visit to the UK.
